WE NEED NEW COUNCILLORS
WE NEED YOU! BECOME A PARISH COUNCILLOR FOR CAM VALE
The Cam Vale Grouped Parish Council has provision for 9 Parish Councillors, 5 for Longburton, 1 Leweston, 1 Lillington and 2 Holnest. At present we only have 2 Councillors representing Longburton and we need to encourage people to join so that the community is properly represented.
What is a Parish Council?
There are over 8,700 parish and town councils representing around 16 million people across England. They form the most local level of government and cover many rural and urban areas.
What services do they provide?
Your parish or town council has an overall responsibility for the well-being of the local community. Their work falls into three main categories:
• representing your local community
• delivering services to meet local needs
• striving to improve quality of life in the parish
Councillors contribute to local knowledge with regards to Planning Applications; Developments ie Lonburton Depot Site. They help identify problems such as speeding; highway issues; general maintenance required in the area; street lighting,. Advice on bus shelters; crime reduction; footpaths; litter bins etc. Issues that affect your immediate community. The Parish Council is an important link within Local Government, giving direct contact with Parishioners and feeding into West Dorset District Council and County Council.
How do they make decisions?
Your parish or town council is made up of a number of councillors who meet regularly to make decisions on the work and direction of the council. Cam Vale Parish Council meets 5 times a year. There are also individual Parish Meetings in April for the 4 local areas. As elected bodies parish and town councils are responsible to the people they represent – that’s your local community.
Attending a council meeting is the best way to find out what they do. There is information on the Cam Vale Website / , with copies of past agendas and minutes.
If you are interested in being involved please contact the Carinna Vickers, Clerk to the Council at firstname.lastname@example.org and she will be able to give you further information and advice on how to become a Parish Councillor.
